Delamara Point (Del il-Mara meaning the womans shadow) is an excellent but often overlooked diving site on the south coast of Malta.
Delimara Point is not dived very frequently, which is a shame as it is an enjoyable dive with much to offer both for novice and more experienced divers. The site is located at the most south easterly point of Malta, a few kilometers from Marsaxlokk fishing village. It can be accessed from shore, but access to the sea is difficult across the salt pans and rocky shore line. The deeper, more off shore reefs, are best done by boat. Delimara Point is a cliff dive with a cave, reef, wall and the wreckage of an old ship situated between shore and the small island. The reef starts at 9 meters and quickly descents to 12 meters where a drop-off continues into deep waters. A cave can be entered at the reef side at 20 meters deep from where a chimney leads up to about 9 meters. Fish life includes silver bream, damselfish and octopus. There are reports of the wreckage of a plane that supposedly lies here but only a few secretive local divers know the location. The area is well known for its strong currents so care should be taken to judge which way the currents are running before diving.
