The shallow Santa Marija Caves or Comino Caves are some of the most fascinating cave systems in the world, located at the north side of Comino, Malta. More than ten are known to divers all having their own special attraction. Some have breathtaking views into the blue through their entrances while other connect with each other and create fantastic swimthroughs. There are caves half above and half below the water which are also perfect for snorkelers and some are huge underwater tunnels. The famous site where most divers go to is at a cave which connects with another cave creating a huge open space in which you can look at the blue sky. This one is the best known but others are often as good and special.

All of the common cave inhabitants can be seen here such as octopus, crabs, spiny lobster and different kinds of sponges. You can also meet conger eels, mullets, shrimp, damselfish, morays and groupers. Shoals of sea, two-banded and saddle breams are always watching for some food and they will swarm you at the slightest notice of your hand approaching one of your pockets. Don't forget to bring the plastic bag back to the boat as you will see why. Plastic bags don’t look good in the sea. It is often the dive masters job to entertain you with pieces of bread stored in their BCD. The boats often moor at less than 15 meter from the main cave entrance at a plateau not more than 10 meters deep.

The beautiful settings and entrances of the caves have been used in filming the movie 'The count of Monte Cristo'. Known by divers are some spectacular rock formations, boulders and some arches. Try to get here early as it can get crowded during the day.
