Diving in the south east of Malta at dive site HMS Maori

Name divesite: HMS Maori
Depth: 5-19m (16-62ft)
Visibility: 10-15m (32-49ft)
Accessibility: Shore, Boat
Time to visit: All year around with warmest water in summer (apr-aug)
Specifications: Diving at a shipwreck. This dive has a lot of marine life.

One of the nice interior sections of the HMS MaoriThe originally 35 meter long British destroyer the HMS Maori is one of the most famous ship wrecks in the Maltese waters. She was of importance of finally sinking the famous German Bismark. She sank in February 1942 when she was bombed during one of Malta's air raids in WWII leaving luckily only one casualty. A bomb hit her in the engine room which was followed by quickly stripping her from useful equipment and guns. When everything was off board she was dragged out of the shipping lane to her current location where she still rests today. Nowadays she lies close to the main harbor of Valetta next to St Elmo's fort at only 70 meters from shore and is a very interesting historical wreck.

The wreck has been broken in two and during time there is actually not much left except a great dive location with plenty of life. Penetration of the wreck is still possible at many places but easiest at the back. Be careful as it is easy to get scratched by the sharp metal objects sticking out of the wreck. Exiting is easiest and safest through the huge holes in her starboard side. There are still some torpedo's and cannons to be seen but also the portholes and bridge are still impressive.

She is an old wreck with a lot of coral and marine life that have decided to live here over time. Octopus are common and sea horses, bream, scorpion fish and flat fish can be found in the area's surrounding the wreck. There is a small reef nearby which is shallow and excellent to do your safety stop and to find groupers.
